Quarter Breaks

Winter Break:

The period between fall and winter quarters—winter break—is not covered by the academic year housing contract. In addition to the campus dining halls and most other dining locations being closed during the winter break, the residential facilities at the ten colleges, Transfer Community, Redwood Grove, The Village, and the University Town Center will close at 12 noon on Saturday, December 14, 2019 and will reopen on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.

Key Dates:

  • Friday, December 13, 2019: Finals and fall quarter end. Last meal served is dinner.
  • Saturday, December 14, 2019: Residences close at 12 noon.
  • Friday, January 3, 2020: Residences reopen at 10am. Dining service resumes, first meal served is brunch. Check dining.ucsc.edu/calendar for details.
  • Monday, January 6, 2020: Instruction begins for winter quarter. Dining service resumes normal schedule.

Students who have a valid need to stay in residence during the weekend following fall finals (Dec.14-15) may request a fall quarter housing contract extension. Requests will be limited to these specific dates and are subject to the review and approval of the student’s college/residential facility. Requests may be submitted through Student Housing Online from Monday, November 18 through Friday, December 6. Any student discovered in a closed residential facility without an approved contract extension will be assessed a $100.00 unauthorized stay over fee, escorted off the premises, and may face conduct action.

Spring Break:

The period of residence between winter and spring quarters is covered by this contract. Although there is no additional fee, students may be required to submit a written request to remain in residence during any portion of the break period. Please note that dining service in the dining halls is available during this time at an additional cost.

Spring Break Key Dates:

  • Friday, March 20, 2020: Finals and winter quarter end. Last meal served is dinner.
  • Saturday, March 21 – Saturday, March 28, 2020: Spring Break: Residences remain open. Dining hall access is available at an additional cost.
  • Sunday, March 29, 2020: Residences open at 10:00 a.m. for new students. First meal served is dinner. Check dining.ucsc.edu/calendar for details.

End of Academic Year:

All undergraduate residential facilities close at noon on Friday, June 12, 2020.

Beginning May 22, students who have a valid need to remain in residence the weekend following finals may request a contract extension through Student Housing Online. Whether you're working on campus, waiting to catch your international/out-of-state flight, or waiting to move to another university housing location for summer, you'll need to submit an extension request to stay in residence after the quarter ends. Requests are subject to the review and approval of the student’s college/residential facility. Any student discovered in a closed residential facility without an approved contract extension will be assessed a $100.00 unauthorized stay over fee, escorted off the premises, and may face conduct action. Dining service in the dining halls is available during the weekend following finals (June 13-14) at an additional cost.

Note: Current spring quarter residents who will be living in Transitional Housing/Summer Session Housing need to submit a spring contract extension in order to remain in residence until you can move into your summer assignment on Tuesday, June 16.

Family Student Housing and Graduate Student Housing

The housing contracts for these communities are for the full year (through the end of June), and students may stay in residence during all academic breaks.
