Quarter Breaks
FALL BREAK
All campus residences will be open during the fall break (Wednesday, November 27 to Sunday, December 1), and students who wish to remain on campus are encouraged to do so. Please be aware that only one campus dining location will be open during the break and hours will be limited.
Beginning November 13, in order to get an accurate count of who will remain on campus for break and who plans to be away from campus, residents will be asked to log in to the Housing Portal to update their housing status for fall break.
Fall Break Key Dates:
- Wednesday, November 27, 2024: Fall break begins. Last meal served is lunch.
- Wednesday, November 27 - Sunday, December 1, 2024 – Fall break: Residences remain open. However, dining hall access is limited. Check dining.ucsc.edu/calendar for details.
- Sunday, December 1, 2024: Dining service resumes regular schedule starting with dinner. Check dining.ucsc.edu/calendar for details.
WINTER BREAK
The period between fall and winter quarters—winter break—is not covered by the academic year housing contract and students are not permitted to remain in their campus residence. In addition to the campus dining halls and most other dining locations being closed during the winter break, the Undergraduate residential facilities at the ten colleges, Transfer Community, Redwood Grove, The Village, and University Town Center, will close at 12 noon on Saturday, December 14, 2024 and will reopen on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
Beginning November 18, students who have a valid need to remain in residence the weekend following finals (Dec. 14–16) may request a late checkout through the Housing Portal. Requests will be limited to these specific dates and are subject to the review and approval of the student’s residential community. Any student in a closed residential facility without an approved late checkout will be assessed a $100.00 unauthorized stay over fee, escorted off the premises, and may face conduct action.

- Monday, March 31, 2025: Instruction begins for spring quarter. Dining service resumes normal schedule.
END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR

Beginning May 1, students who have a valid need to remain in residence the weekend following finals may request a late checkout through the Housing Portal. Whether you're working on campus, waiting to catch your international/out-of-state flight, or waiting to move to another university housing location for summer, you'll need to submit a request to stay in residence after the quarter ends. Requests are subject to the review and approval of the student’s residential community. Any student in a closed residential facility without an approved late checkout will be assessed a $100.00 unauthorized stay over fee, escorted off the premises, and may face conduct action.
Note: Only students who are participating in a campus commencement on Monday, June 16 or students with a valid summer housing contract are eligible to stay until Tuesday, June 17. Spring quarter residents who have applied for on-campus summer housing need to submit a late checkout request in order to remain in their spring residence until they can move into their summer assignments.
Quarter Break information pertains to Undergraduate students with academic year contracts living in college residence halls and apartments, the Transfer Community, Redwood Grove, The Village, and University Town Center. Information does not pertain to students with year-round contracts, Graduate students living at Graduate Student Housing or Family Student Housing, as the housing contracts for these communities are for the full year (through the end of June), and students may stay in residence during all academic breaks.

Undergraduate Year Round Student Housing
The housing contracts for these communities are for the full year (through the start of September), and students may stay in residence during all academic breaks.
