Continuing Student Room Selection Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

The information in this FAQ section is for continuing students.

Is fall housing still available for priority housing students?

Yes! There are still spaces available for priority housing applicants. The most preferred types of housing—apartments and singles—were selected quickly in the housing selection process. However, there are still available spaces for students with priority housing status.

I wasn’t able to select housing during my housing selection appointment. Do I still have housing priority?

Yes! Your priority status remains intact and you are on the priority waitlist. Your Housing Coordinator will do their best to find you a space matching your preferences or will offer an alternate space.

When I logged on to make my housing selection, there were no available spaces in my community. What does this mean?

Unfortunately, all the spaces made available for your community’s Room Selection have already been chosen by other students. Though you were unable to self-select your preferred housing assignment for fall, there are still spaces available on campus. Beginning Thursday, May 19, Housing Coordinators across campus will work collectively to confirm housing assignments for students with priority status. If a space is available at another college/community you will be offered an alternate assignment. The housing assignment process takes time and will unfold over several weeks.

What happens if there are no spaces available that match my preferences?

If there are no spaces available that match your room preferences, you will receive an alternate housing offer. Alternate housing offers are made via UCSC email and require the student to accept within forty-eight (48) hours or the offer is void and the space will be offered to another student. Closely monitor your UCSC email and/or set up email forwarding to have your UCSC email forwarded to another account you check regularly.

What happens if I decline or do not respond to an alternate housing offer?

We encourage all students to strongly consider accepting an alternate housing offer. Declining or not responding to a first offer for alternate housing will result in loss of priority housing status though the student’s housing application will remain on the general waitlist. Declining or not responding to a second offer may result in termination of the student’s waitlist application. If this happens, the student will be required to submit a new waitlist application if they are later interested in future university housing.

What happens if a space matching my preferences opens up?

We cannot predict when or what type of spaces may become available. If a space matching one of your room preferences becomes available, you will be assigned to the space. You will not receive notification prior to being assigned, but a confirmation email will be sent to your UCSC email once you’ve been assigned housing.

What should I do next?

Consider updating your room preferences. There are a limited number of apartment spaces and single rooms. The more flexible you are in your housing options, the greater your chance of being assigned housing. Return to the Housing Portal if you would like to update the room preferences listed in your housing application. If no housing spaces match your preferences, you will be offered an alternate housing assignment.

Know the process can take time. Our Housing Coordinators are working as quickly as possible to assign students housing. However, the process can take some time and extend throughout the summer. Please continue to check your UCSC email over the summer to ensure you receive updates in a timely manner.
