1. Porter/Kresge Dining Hall renovation

Porter/Kresge Dining Hall is closed for renovation. Upgrades will include new cooking stations for made-to-order cuisine and increased serving capacity. “Green” building system improvements will also be included that will conserve energy and water.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during the temporary inconveniences associated with this project and look forward to enjoying the renovated spaces.

As always, students can eat in any open dining hall on campus or at the University Inn. Here is a complete list of dining locations.

2. Buddy Meal Program

Is your roommate feeling under the weather? Let them stay in bed, and use the "Buddy Meal" program to get them some hot soup and other nutritious food from the dining hall. The "Buddy Meal" program is designed to provide meals to sick students who are unable to leave their residences for health reasons.

If you are picking up a meal for someone who is ill, you will need:

  • your student ID card and
  • the ill student’s ID card

3. Filing period for meal plan changes: November 2–9, 2009 (effective January 4, 2010)

If you would like to change your meal plan for the winter quarter you can submit a change at studenthousing.ucsc.edu beginning Monday, November 2nd. Both upgrades and downgrades are allowed during the meal plan change filing period. Outside of the filing period, you may only upgrade your meal plan. The filing period ends November 9th.

Changes made during the filing period take effect at the beginning of winter quarter and will be reflected on your winter quarter billing statement.

If you live at The Village, University Town Center, Graduate Student Housing, Family Student Housing, Camper Park or are a commuter student and are not currently on a meal plan, you may purchase one at any time at studenthousing.ucsc.edu. You can also purchase a Slug Club meal card at any campus dining hall (see related article below).

Contact meals@ucsc.edu or call (831) 459-2394 for information.

4. The 55 and 75 Meals Per Quarter Plans

Did you know you can use your 55 and 75 Meals Per Quarter Plan at more locations than just the dining halls? (Each meal provides $8.00 in equivalency value). You can have a delicious meal at the University Center's Terra Fresca restaurant. Oakes Cafe and Kresge's Owl's Nest also accept meal equivalencies. You can even buy groceries with your meals to keep your pantry stocked.

The 55 Meals Per Quarter Plan yields about five meals per week. If you enjoy the convenience, selection and quality of UC Santa Cruz Dining and are running low on meals, you can buy supplemental meals in blocks of 10 for $73 a block (supplemental meals provide an equivalency value of $6.00 each). Purchase blocks online at studenthousing.ucsc.edu.

5. Grocery program delivers what you want to campus

Need some snacks on hand to fuel those late night study sessions? Or maybe you live in an apartment and want to stock your kitchen? The grocery program offers over 230 items, including bulk snacks, local produce, microwave meals, organic and natural foods, gluten-free and wheat-free items, and much more! You can download an order form at grocery.ucsc.edu. Submit your order on Mondays before 6:00pm and pick up your items at Banana Joe’s next to Crown/Merrill dining hall the following Thursday 3:00–7:30pm. The grocery program is open to all UCSC students and accepts meal equivalencies (55 and 75 Meals Per Quarter Plans), Flexi Dollars, cash, check, and credit cards.

6. Getting the most from your Flexi Dollars

All meal plans include $50 Flexi Dollars per quarter. Use them at most dining venues on campus including cafes, restaurants, and coffee bars. Get a 10% discount at dining halls when you pay with Flexis. Purchase additional Flexi Dollars at studenthousing.ucsc.edu.

7. Special price on Slug Club meals through October 16, 2009

Students who do not have a meal plan as part of their housing contract (The Village, University Town Center, Graduate Student Housing, Family Student Housing, Camper Park) or students living off campus who would like to eat at the dining halls can get a sweet deal on meals through October 16th. The Slug Club meal card can be loaded with increments of five meals and it will get you into the dining halls with the swipe of the card. During the fall quarter sale, buy a Slug Club card loaded with 20 meals or more and get the sale price of $7.25 per meal—a savings of over $3.00 off the dining hall cash price for dinner. Purchase Slug Club cards from dining hall cashiers. More info is available at dining.ucsc.edu.

8. Winter break campus closure

The period of residence between fall and winter quarters is not covered by the academic year housing contract for the colleges, The Village, University Inn, or University Town Center. In addition to the campus dining halls and most other dining locations being closed during the winter break, the residential facilities at the ten colleges, The Village, University Town Center and University Inn will be closed from 12:00 noon on Friday, December 11, 2009 through Saturday, January 2, 2010.

Students who have a valid need to stay in residence during the weekend following fall finals (Dec. 11–13) may request a winter break contract extension. Requests will be limited to these specific dates and are subject to the review and approval of the student’s college/residential facility. Students may choose to return to the residences on Sunday, January 3, however, limited dining service in the campus dining halls will be available. Normal meal service will resume with brunch on Monday, January 4.

  • Additional information will be made available later during fall quarter 2009. Check the web site for updates.

9. Authorize your parents to discuss your housing/dining charges

State and federal laws prevent us from disclosing your financial information with any third party (i.e. parent or guardian) without your consent. If you wish to give someone else permission to discuss your housing/dining charges with the Campus Housing Office, please complete the “Release of Information” process at studenthousing.ucsc.edu.

10. Meet your Food Service Adviser

Each dining hall has a student Food Service Adviser (FSA) who serves as a liaison to dining chefs and managers and makes sure student ideas are heard. To make your dining experience the best it can be, get to know your FSA.

11. New laundry machines in university housing

UCSC has new card reader machines in the laundry rooms at the colleges and residential communities. Most laundry rooms have “Load It!” stations where laundry credits that are purchased via web site or text messaging can be loaded onto laundry smart cards. Also, in accessible areas across campus, there are multi-function stations that accept cash, vend replacement cards, and add value to cards. Those locations are:

  • Cowell Commons hallway, outside the Fireside Lounge
  • Stevenson Commons Recreation Room
  • Crown Fireside Lounge
  • Crown-Merrill Apartment Building 15 Laundry
  • Merrill B Basement Laundry
  • College Nine Mail Room
  • College Ten Mail Room
  • Kresge Laundry Room
  • Porter Mail Room (to be installed)
  • College Eight BL Residence Life office lounge
  • Oakes Mail Room
  • Family Student Housing 500 Loop Laundry Room

12. Keep Your Contact Information Up To Date
