Construction and Renovation Projects

UPDATED: February 27, 2008 9:01 AM

Porter College Residence Hall-B Renovation Project

A building renovation project at Porter College is scheduled to begin in summer 2008. The project will include upgrades, enhancements, and seismic retrofitting to Porter Building-B residence hall. The building will remain open as usual through the 2007-08 academic year.

The renovations are part of the ten-year major maintenance cycle through UCSC’s ten colleges. Often these major maintenance projects occur during the summer and are completed before students return in the fall. However, in the case of Porter Building-B, the scope of the work and the length of time it will take to complete the project will mean that Building-B will be closed during the 2008-09 academic year.

More than just a fresh coat of paint, the scheduled improvements include bathroom renovations; new carpeting, window coverings, and furniture; building systems will get “green” upgrades that conserve resources such as water and electricity; and to keep pace with constantly improving engineering practices, the building will be retrofitted to meet newly introduced seismic standards.

Porter College has typically had a slightly larger population of students than other colleges at UCSC. To ensure that UCSC has enough space to meet its housing commitments, fewer new students will be admitted to Porter College for the 2008-09 academic year. This adjustment will more evenly distribute students across the ten colleges.

Another phase of this large project will be the renovation of the Porter dining hall. The dining facility will close during spring quarter 2009, but will be open during fall 2008 and winter 2009. Upgrades will include new cooking stations for made-to-order cuisine and increased serving capacity. “Green” building system improvements, similar to the upgrades in the residence hall to conserve water and electricity, will also be included in the dining building. During the renovations, dining services will be available at the nearby College Eight dining hall.
